January, 1993
Irina Bassis offers first Unkrainian culture and Russian language classes through the Newton Community Schools. Vitaly Malovichko, Alla Dovganiuk, Nataly Popil, Olga Pelch and Irina Litvan become the first Ukrainian students from Smila and Cherkassy to study in Newton.

May, 1993
First official delegation from Newton visits Smila. The contingent includes Marvin Campbell, Jane Ann Cotton, Sandra Haines, Dan Krumm and John McNeer.

November, 1993
The second annual meeting of OPEN is held. At this meeting the five delegates, who visited Smila Ukraine, gave a debriefing of their official visit in May.
