Elbe River Link-Up Commemoration

Honor Jasper County's World War II veterans by commemorating the April 25, 1945 link-up of the U.S. and Soviet armies over the Elbe River. This historic meeting, marking a significant step toward the end of World War II in Europe, included soldiers from Newton, Iowa and Smila, Ukraine. Although the sister-city relationship between Newton and Smila did not begin until 1991, many World War II veterans in both communities vividly recall Elbe Day. The sculpture dedication ceremony, taking place at the Jasper County Historical Museum, will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 15. Please join us in remembering, honoring, and celebrating our World War II veterans and their families.
